The NDP is raising concerns over what it sees as the government’s lack of commitment to public libraries and the failure to acknowledge the crucial role they play in supporting families, seniors, and communities.
During the pandemic, library usage increased by 70 per cent, and this trend has continued post-pandemic.
However, leader Jim Dinn says government has kept the library budget at 2012 levels, failing to provide additional funding for inflation and operation costs since 1999.
He notes that libraries offer more than books, serving as community hubs with vital services like internet training.
Dinn urges the government to develop a long-term plan to strengthen and improve public libraries, emphasizing their essential role in supporting education and entertainment for all residents.
