The Leader of the federal NDP says that something must be done to address the cost of groceries, an issue that has hit remote areas of Labrador harder than most.
Jagmeet Singh visited the province last week to discuss, among other topics, the inflated cost of groceries. In Labrador, that cost is even greater than that on the island.
Singh says their plan to punish price fixers, tax excessive profits, and increase competition will help Labrador, as well as all areas of the province. However, he says in terms of the remote north, there are additional measures that need to be taken.
He says there have been subsidies for the companies selling groceries in the region, but those subsidies do not benefit the people living there. He says the focus needs to be on increasing access to affordable food for the people, not helping the large corporations.
