Memorial University’s Students Union says the institution is withholding over $5,000 belonging to a woman from Belize who has graduated from the Ocean Naval Architectural Engineering Program.
Jada Jasmine Jones was given a grant from the Government of Belize to cover educational and living expenses. She has paid all tuition and fees to MUN, but Jones says she is owed almost $5,500, the unused portion of the Belize grant.
MUNSU’s Executive Director of Advocacy has taken the dispute a step further, accusing the Cashier’s Office of ignoring her and dismissing her concerns. McKenzie Broders says the Cashier’s Office has a duty to students, especially international ones who may need extra help and guidance. She wants the university to investigate what she sees as systemic and personal racism within the Cashier’s Office
She says the treatment endured by Jones in seeking a repayment and the barriers enforced by the office throughout the process is deeply concerning.
