A new healthy food policy at hospitals and medical clinics in eastern Newfoundland isn’t going over well for many people.
About two-thirds of respondents to the VOCM Question of the Day poll disagree with the move, which eliminates some food and drinks from menus.
The Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador says there is no such thing as “bad” food, noting everything has some nutritional value.
Executive director Paul Thomey says people recovering from an illness need support around them, adding that may include consumption of “comfort” food.
Over the next couple of years, candy, sports and energy drinks, all chips, vitamin water and soft drinks, bars, chocolate-covered items and deep- or partially fried food will no longer be available at hospitals and clinics in the eastern region.
Thomey says his organization promotes balance and moderation in all things.
“We know that some people out there have psychological issues that stem from their relationship with food,” he said. “Taking away things that may in some sense be a comfort food can be a trigger in people who have an eating disorder.”
