As the hurricane season gets underway, there is heightened public awareness in the wake of the damage caused by Hurricane Fiona last year.
The provincial government is encouraging residents to be prepared and put together emergency kits in the event of being cut off or without power for up to 72 hours.
While no major storms are in the immediate forecast, the season usually ramps up in September. Meteorologist Chris Fogarty with the Canadian Hurricane Centre advises people to stay on top of the latest forecasts, and be prepared.
Fogarty says it’s wise to think longer term as well.
“If you get the funds, grab a generator, sooner rather than later, because once it’s in the news, then everybody’s scrambling to get these things.” Fogarty is also advising people get valuables up out of their basements, which was a lesson learned by many following widespread flooding in Nova Scotia over the last month or so.
