Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provided an update today on the wildfires raging in the Northwest Territories and British Columbia.
Trudeau was speaking at a cabinet retreat on Prince Edward Island.
He stated that there are indications the wildfire situation in the Northwest Territories, which forced the evacuation of parts of Yellowknife and numerous other communities near Great Slave Lake, may be improving.
Trudeau told reporters this morning that fires in the NWT may be coming under control and that critical infrastructure in the region remains intact. Discussions are now underway about allowing displaced residents to return to the region when it’s deemed safe to do so.
The Canadian Armed Forces are in the region assisting with the fire response, and Service Canada is helping evacuees.
The Prime Minister thanked the many firefighters and others who have battled the fires and are providing help on the ground.
