More questions are being raised about the care provided at long term care and personal care homes in the province.
Eric Noel is speaking out after his father, who has dementia, wandered away from a personal care home in Carbonear Wednesday night.
Eric says his 80-year-old father tumbled down over an embankment behind the home, and despite suffering head injuries, managed to make his way to a nearby house to ask for help.
The homeowners called an ambulance and Noel was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery to treat his lacerations Thursday morning.
A distressed Eric Noel says a lot needs to be done to improve long-term care in the province.
He says retirement homes should not be accepting dementia patients “if they’re not equipped to deal with them.”
The provincial government is conducting a review of nursing homes, a recommendation made years earlier by the Seniors’ Advocate. Admission policies are among the items being examined in the review.
