Sharing the Harvest NL is reminding food banks to apply for their licence to receive game meat as the big game hunting season begins.
The organization donates game meat, fish and foraged berries to foodbanks to provide traditional Newfoundland and Labrador foods to those who need it.
Executive Director and Founder of Sharing the Harvest NL, Barry Fordham, says that they will be starting to donate meat once the season opens, so food banks need to apply for a permit to receive it.
Last year, they provided around 5,000 meals of game meat, and he hopes this year they’ll have even more.
While donations of game meat to food banks have to be made through government recognized organizations, Fordham is hoping that will change.
He says if someone is confidant enough to cut the meat themselves and grind it, they should be able to donate it.
