The town of Port aux Basques is bracing for more heavy rain in the forecast following what has been an unusually wet summer.
A rainfall warning is in effect for the west and southwest coasts with total amounts of up to 100 mm expected between now and tomorrow morning. Higher amounts are possible in certain areas.
Mayor Brian Button says the latest system comes on the heels of some intense rain this past weekend.
“Every time we have rain now it’s never the 5 to 10 mm stuff, it’s always the 70 to 100 mm and we’ve got more of it coming in the next couple of days.”
Button says the town is preparing as best as it can, but heavy rain is testing existing infrastructure.
“Our systems are not handling it all,” he says. “We get rain so intense in such a short period of time…the systems just can’t handle everything that’s being thrown at it.”
Button says they’ve had a steady forecast of periodic heavy rain throughout the summer and that, coupled with the damage and erosion caused by Hurricane Fiona’s storm surge last year, makes things even worse.
