The provincial government is expanding its travelling orthopaedics program to Carbonear General Hospital.
Surgeries will begin in the community on September 25.
Premier Andrew Furey made the announcement today along with Minister Tom Osborne, and Divisional Head of Orthopaedics with NL Health Services, Dr. Will Moores.
The province already has a travelling orthopaedic surgery program established in St. Anthony. Between January and July of this year, 76 hip and knee surgeries were performed In St. Anthony.
Government expects at least 150 surgeries to be completed in Carbonear annually, with the hope being that at least 300 annual procedures can be completed at the site when things get up and running.
Health Minister Tom Osborne hints that more orthopaedic announcements are to come. He says an announcement will be made for Gander in the coming weeks.
