Prostate Cancer Foundation Canada is raising awareness and urging men to get checked.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
A recent Angus Reid survey shows 61 per cent of Canadians asked say their loved ones procrastinate in getting tested for prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer can be detected in the early stages with a simple blood test. Men 45 and older should get tested every year, but the age threshold drops to 40 for black men and those who have a family history of prostate, ovarian and breast cancer.
Executive Director of the PCFC Leah Lariviere says one in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, and 23,000 men in Canada will get that diagnosis this year alone.
She says they want people talking and getting their blood tested early to monitor their PSA levels.
