There will be a student-led march for climate change this week in St. John’s as part of a global campaign.
“Fridays for Future St. John’s” will meet at the University Centre Friday afternoon and march along the Parkway to Confederation Building for speeches.
The group, which is calling on the university to quit accepting money from fossil fuel sectors, also urges governments not to put any more money into fossil fuel projects including the Bay du Nord oil field and oil and gas exploration.
The students urge for a rapid and equitable phase-out of the use of fossil fuels in the province, and frown on any discussion of diesel-powered electricity in Newfoundland and Labrador.
They want more and better public transit, including in rural areas, while moving away from car-based infrastructure.
The rally starts at 1:00 Friday and winds down by 3:00 p.m.
