It’s been 22 years since thousands of people died in a terrorist attack on the United States that shocked the world.
The anniversary was marked in Gander this morning with a commemorative service.
Hundreds of international aircraft landed in Newfoundland and Labrador on September 11, 2001, when US airspace was closed in the wake of the attacks. The bulk of those planes landed in Gander, leaving thousands of confused and frightened passengers with nowhere to go.
The residents of Gander stepped up, taking visitors into their homes, feeding them, and even lending them their cars to get around. The outpouring of generosity and kindness has been recognized and celebrated in a variety of ways, including the blockbuster musical Come From Away.
Gander Mayor Percy Farwell says for local residents it’s a time of reflection, but also of celebrating the many life-long friendships that were made during an uncertain and frightening time.
“Those bonds formed here are very strong,” says Farwell, who recognizes similar efforts in communities throughout the province at that time.
