While COVID-19’s threat to health has been reduced since the start of the pandemic in 2020, the importance of vaccination remains.
That’s according to Dr. Peter Daley, an associate professor of medicine and infectious disease at MUN.

He says COVID is less of a health threat now because of vaccination and natural immunity through previous infections.
Daley says the disease is thought of now as a “routine respiratory tract infection,” and is similar to influenza in that it is always a concern to vulnerable populations. As such, Daley emphasizes the importance of staying up-to-date on vaccines as their effectiveness wanes over time.
He says a new vaccine was approved by Health Canada in the last few days.
He says the “amazing” mRNA technology in the vaccine, which will soon be available to Canadians, can be adjusted to the current circulating virus.
