NDP Leader Jim Dinn has written the Minister Responsible for Residential Tenancies to ask for action on what he calls “exorbitant” rental costs in the province.
In his letter to Minister Sarah Stoodley, Dinn outlines several cases in which people have seen their rent increases by between 50 and 80 per cent over the last two years.
Dinn notes that those numbers far exceed numbers provided to the NDP by government earlier this summer.
Dinn says action is needed to help with rental costs in the province.
He states that investments in non-market community housing is one solution, and another is rent stabilization.
He envisions a system similar to the PUB, whereby larger landlords would have to justify rate increases.
