The President of the FFAW is touting their science department for helping to fill in what he believes are gaps left in science by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Greg Pretty recently made a presentation to the Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, which is specifically looking at seal populations.
When asked about conflicting information coming from DFO, Pretty states that the union recognized early on that there is a disconnect with that organization.
That’s why they started their own science department, headed by Dr. Erin Carruthers, according to Pretty.
He says they would be “much worse shape” in regards to quotas. Pretty notes that they do their own surveys on crab, for example, because DFO’s “out of business on surveys.”
