The Nunatsiavut Government is alerting its members of a privacy breach of personal and health information.
Nunatsiavut became aware of the breach in late July after Advanced Data Systems, which develops and maintains Nunatsiavut’s network, found that the information of upwards of 7,500 people might have been accessed by the hacker.
The information includes names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and e-mail addresses.
Information on those who receive assistance with health costs not covered by insurance, such as MCP numbers, and details about medical trips may have also been breached as well as information on those who receive assistance for post-secondary education, such as how much money they make, the names and dates of birth of family members and student ID numbers.
The Nunatsiavut government has determined that about 39 Social Insurance Numbers were on the network. Nunatsiavut will be contacting directly those whose SIN numbers were accessed.
ADS provided an update on the investigation in August, and informed the Nunatsiavut Government that it had negotiated the deletion of the accessed date. However, Nunatsiavut cannot be sure the hacker deleted the data, so they are making the public aware of the situation.
They are asking beneficiaries to be vigilant by checking credit scores, speaking with their financial institutions, monitor accounts for unusual activity, etc.
Those looking for more information can contact the Nunatsiavut Government at 709-922-2942 or 709-922-2573.
