Three people, two from Ontario and one from St. John’s, have been arrested and charged in connection with a drug seizure in the centre city area of St. John’s yesterday afternoon.
The RNC’s Drug Investigation Unit launched its investigation on Tuesday of this week.
On Thursday, police descended on a Merrymeeting Road property and seized a quantity of cocaine, Oxycodone, approximately $4,000 in cash, a loaded, sawed-off shotgun and a handgun-style BB gun.
Forty-year-old Zwelakhe Mhlongo of Ontario is facing charges of breach of a firearm prohibition order and possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized, while 31-year-old Candice Nembhard is facing a similar single firearm possession charge.
Forty-three year old Tyler Cannon of St. John’s is charged with breaches and one count of possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized.
All three appeared in provincial court this morning, read the charges, and promptly returned to jail.
Mhlongo and Nembhard have bail hearings set for next Wednesday, while Cannon consented to custody until his next court appearance on October 6.
RNC Const. James Cadigan says further drug-related charges are pending.
He told reporters today that drug and weapons crimes are having an impact on the entire community.
“To make it simple and to not mince words” says Cadigan, “anybody who is engaging in the drug trade at an illicit drug level, you are essentially promoting and supporting the presence of these firearms and these drugs on our streets that are causing harm.”
