Labrador Marine is reporting an increase in summer passenger and vehicle traffic on its Straits ferry service.
Completion of the paving of the Tans Labrador Highway is believed to be a major contributing factor in the increase in passenger traffic, and a subsequent drop in commercial traffic.
The number of passengers crossing the Strait of Belle Isle this year was up by nearly 2,000 from the previous year, while private vehicle traffic was up by the same amount.
Commercial traffic however was down from the previous year, as was the number of bus tours.
Labrador Marine General Manager Captain Austin Daley says they’ve seen consistent year-to-year increases in passenger and private vehicle traffic and says the summer weather was ideal.
That, according to Daley, allowed for 92 straight days without a lost trip.
Daley says an update on the coastal ferry service is due by the first week of October.
