The mayor of St. Mary’s says the town is making some good headway in having their concerns regarding the environmental hazard that is the old fish sauce plant addressed.
The derelict building still contains vats of putrefying fish sauce, left sitting for decades. A federal government report, which came to light earlier this year, showed that effluent from the old plant was highly toxic—able to kill any fish it comes into contact with within 15 minutes.
That revelation prompted Mayor Steve Ryan to renew his calls for action to have the site properly cleaned up once and for all.
Ryan told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly they’re making headway in their efforts to getting the issued finally addressed.
He says samples from the area have been sent away, and he’s hoping the clean-up process can get started in the next month or so.
