A Newfoundland family is making a big difference for cancer patients in far-off Luxembourg.
Julia Dauphinee of St. John’s moved to Luxembourg years ago after her husband got a job with NATO. While there, their 20-month-old daughter Caroline was diagnosed with brain cancer and endured numerous treatments in Paris, France – a four-hour drive away on the best of days.
Now six years old and three years in remission, little Caroline held what’s believed to be Luxembourg’s very first Terry Fox run on the weekend.
Her proud mom, Julia, says Caroline was inspired by a story about Terry Fox contained in the children’s book Little People, Big Dreams.
She decided she wanted to be a helper and host her own Terry Fox run for cancer research with $100 as her goal. In the end, she managed to raise the equivalent of $1,000 Canadian.

That’s not the only way in which Caroline and her family are making a difference. Based on their own experiences, Julia lobbied the Luxembourg Parliament for greater pediatric oncology capacity in Luxembourg, and her plea was heard.
The motion for greater pediatric oncology capacity passed unanimously in the Chamber of Deputies, and now, “the new beds are being built” says Dauphinee.
