The Majestic Theatre in St. John’s officially opens to the public today with the Wild Rovers, a production described as a madcap adventure inspired by the music of the Irish Rovers.
The newly refurbished theatre is run by Terra Bruce Productions.
Bob Hallett of Terra Bruce told a crowd gathered at the Majestic this morning that bringing the theatre back to life is an honour.
He offered his sincere thanks to founder and visionary Walter Schroeder and his wife Maria for making it all possible.
Schroeder, originally from Winnipeg, acknowledged how some might question his interest in theatre in Newfoundland. He recalled a trip he made across Newfoundland in the 1990s, something that left a lasting impact on him.
He credits his interest in Newfoundland music and culture to a tape by Uncle Harry’s Bar Band that he and his wife purchased for their road trip.
He and his wife fell in love with the music and he says had they not stopped and bought that tape “I doubt very much we’d be here today.”
The Wild Rovers runs today through to October 1 at the Majestic Theatre in St. John’s. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 709-753-4900 or by email at thewildroversmusical.com.
