A rally is planned for today in St. John’s to call on the federal government to conduct an Impact Assessment of World Energy GH2’s plans for a wind energy development to fuel a hydrogen production plant.
The company is planning to erect 164 wind turbines on the Port au Port Peninsula, and an additional 164 turbines in the Codroy region.
Opponents say the massive turbines will have a devastating impact on area residents and the region’s unique flora and fauna.
The Social Justice Co-op and Council of Canadians say the project is being touted by government as part of the transition to green energy, but the hydrogen and ammonia produced will be exported overseas for private profit, leaving area residents with “a ravaged environment and decimated livelihoods.”
The rally is at the Cabot Building on Barter’s Hill in St. John’s at noon.
