Healthy living isn’t as easy as some might think, and it’s getting tougher to keep a healthy lifestyle. That’s according to Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, who acknowledges the rising cost of living is affecting the choices households make when it comes to eating well.
The province just came out of Well-Being Week, a time set aside to highlight the factors that contribute to living a healthy life.
She says healthy living in theory is an easy concept to grasp, but the reality is that there are real barriers preventing people from doing what needs to be done to improve their health. For instance, those living with food insecurity may not be able to afford healthier options)
Fitzgerald says Public Health aims to improve the social determinants of health, but she recognizes that issues in poverty and homelessness are hard to ignore.
That’s why their work is rooted in equity and social justice.
