Premier Andrew Furey says he awaits a response from Quebec Premier Francois Legault on ongoing discussions to reopen the Upper Churchill contract to allow Quebec more power.
Furey spoke with reporters in Quebec City this morning following meetings of the Eastern Canadian premiers and New England governors.
Quebec Premier Francois Legault has indicated he’d be willing to renegotiate the contentious and lop-sided Upper Churchill contract before it expires in 2041, in order to purchase more power from the Churchill Falls hydro development.

Furey says talks are underway, but there is no progress to report at this time.
“Our teams have been talking, and we’re anxiously awaiting what Mr. Legault and his teams have to say,” Furey told reporters today.
Furey won’t say if compensation for the discrepancy between what Hydro Quebec reaped over the years from Upper Churchill power versus the relatively paltry sum NL received is part of those discussions—simply responding “show us the money” when questioned this morning.
