A new monument to honour the Martyrs of Gallipoli was officially unveiled last evening at the Trail of the Caribou Memorial Park on The Boulevard in St. John’s.
The installation of the Turkish monument completes what the provincial government says is a reciprocal agreement between Newfoundland and Labrador and the Republic of Tűrkiye, which included the unveiling of the sixth and final monument on the Trail of the Caribou in Gallipoli last September.
A number of Turkish officials were on hand for yesterday’s ceremony including Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Yildiz, Turkish Amabassador to Canada Esra Demir, Governor of Çanakkale, Ilhami Aktaş and President of the Gallipolli Historic Site, İsmail Kaşdemir.
