SIRT-NL Director Mike King is referencing concerns about the conduct of an RCMP officer to the RCMP’s Civilian Review and Complaints Commission following his review of a complaint of criminal harassment.
The RCMP notified SIRT-NL of a complaint of criminal harassment against one of its officers in central Newfoundland in May.
A woman had contacted RCMP reporting that the officer in question had been harassing and stalking her for several months. Through the course of SIRT-NL’s investigation, they uncovered a number of discrepancies between the evidence gathered through hundreds of text exchanges and some of the information provided by the complainant.
King says while the evidence gathered did not support a charge of criminal harassment against the officer, he did have several concerns with the police officer’s conduct, including the use of a fake social media account. Because of those concerns, King has referred the case to the RCMP’s police complaints commission.
