Flatrock’s Callie Langmead recently made provincial sports history, becoming the first woman to coach in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League.
The life-long hockey fan and self-described student of the game—who is also completing her studies in medicine—took to the bench as an assistant coach for the Northeast Junior Eagles as they took on the Paradise Junior Warriors, the latest in a journey through the sport decades in the making.
She says the move was the logical next step in her hockey career, which includes coaching at the minor level. And while she jokingly says she doesn’t love the attention, she’s proud to spotlight women in hockey.
Langmead says expectations are high for the Eagles this season but at the end of the day, having fun and mentoring the players is the ultimate goal.
She hopes that her historic move behind the bench helps inspire the next wave of female hockey hopefuls in the province, and beyond.
