One-hundred-and-twenty-six young athletes were recognized at the 19th annual Premier’s Athletic Awards on Wednesday.
The event, which recognizes athletic excellence with grants ranging from $500 to $1,500 to offset training and competition costs, took place at the Powerplex in St. John’s.
The Team Gushue Awards were also presented to two athletes: hockey standout Abby Newhook—and Nathan Luscombe, an 18-year-old para swimmer from Grand Falls-Windsor.
“I’ve made a lot of progress in the last couple of years and I like to think it’s recognizing the big steps forward I’ve made in my sport,” he said.
Abby Newhook was unable to attend but her mom, Paula, accepted the award on her behalf.
“Oh my God, we’re super proud of her. You know obviously she’s doing really well, and she’s really happy, loving playing the sport that she loves.”
The Team Gushue Awards were established in honour of the team’s 2006 Olympic gold medal win.
They’re based on athletic and academic excellence and come with a cheque for $5,000.
Former Gushue team members Mike Adam and Jamie Korab were also on hand for the presentations.
