Cooking safety is the theme of Fire Prevention Week which officially starts today.
According to the National Fire Protection Association ®, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
Unattended food in or on the stove is the leading cause of cooking fires and related deaths.
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is reminding residents to watch what you heat, by keeping a close eye on cooking, and set a timer to remind you when something is in the oven.
Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove, always keep a lid or cookie sheet nearby when cooking, and if a small grease fire starts, you can cover the fire and turn off the burner.
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is also recommending to establish a “kid and pet free zone” of at least 1 metre around stoves or grills, or anywhere where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
