The City of St. John’s is looking to install a roundabout at the Portugal Cove Road/Major’s Path/Airport Heights Drive intersection.
The city’s statistics rank that intersection as the fifth most dangerous in St. John’s based on accidents per million vehicles, with 52 collisions from 2018 to 2022.
The roundabout would also reduce long queues that form at the intersection on Portugal Cove Road northbound heading to the airport.
The proposal was met with overwhelming support at yesterday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, including from Councillor Jill Bruce.
She says it’s a dangerous, busy intersection and any improvements to Major’s Path and the shared-use path will only increase foot traffic. She says it is time for council to make the intersection as safe as possible.
Barring any delays, the preliminary timeline estimates the roundabout being in place in four years.
