The capital city is doing what it can to address the need when it comes to affordable housing.
The city manages 476 units, with a 5 per cent vacancy rate.
Mayor Danny Breen says they have a waiting list and they’re working hard to ensure that units are available as quickly as possible when there is turnover.
They had an announcement last week regarding the construction of 35 more units in partnership with Stella’s Circle and Choices for Youth, but Breen acknowledges, “it is a major, major issue, I don’t think you can really explain how significant the housing crisis is right now.”
He says Canada Mortgage and Housing recently estimated that addressing the need for affordable housing will take trillions of dollars.
“I think that kind of puts in perspective the work that’s ahead,” says Breen.
