There is speculation that a provincial election could be called sooner rather than later, but the opposition parties believe there are more pressing issues that should be tackled first.
Premier Andrew Furey fueled the speculation yesterday when he neither confirmed nor denied that an election could be called this calendar year, noting that they will evaluate everything moving forward.
Both PC leader Tony Wakeham and NDP leader Jim Dinn agree that now is not the right time.
Wakeham says they should put people before politics, and a “snap election” now would be putting politics before people. Similarly, Dinn contends that calling an election before addressing the housing and homelessness issue would show that government’s priority is maintaining power rather than helping people.
