The provincial government has announced the details of its continuous glucose monitoring pilot project.
The one year pilot, which has already begun, targets people under the age of 18 with type one diabetes, or those who are being followed by the pediatric diabetes program at the Janeway.
It will assess the outcomes of those patients on hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery systems, which essentially are able to continuously check blood sugar levels and pump insulin into the body as needed.
Patients who participate in the program will receive 100 per cent coverage for the system, through a combination of insurance and government funding.
Pediatric Endocrinologist Dr. Heather Power says she has seen the difference that the technology has made on the faces of parents whose kids are already in the program.
“I see tears of joy in clinic when families come in when they’ve been put on these devices.”
