The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District says it’s taking a reported incident at a school in Mount Pearl very seriously.
The RNC are investigating after receiving reports of a white van lurking in the area of Newtown Elementary over the lunch hour on Tuesday.
Two men in the van were said to be engaging in conversation with young students, potentially attempting to lure them into the vehicle.
The NLESD says education on safety and what to do when approached by strangers is done frequently in schools, especially the younger grades.
Students are instructed to tell teachers or another adult they know if they are approached by someone they don’t know. The school board says school administrators acted quickly when students informed them of the incident, and the RNC were called and parents contacted.
The board says the incident occurred as the lunch time break was coming to an end and the playground was supervised by staff at the time. The board is unable to offer further information due to the ongoing investigations. Early reports indicate that the persons responsible were on the public path connecting Jackman Drive with St. Peter’s Junior High and the St. Peter’s ball field.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC or Crime Stoppers.
