A pediatrician is hopeful that eventually the newly-introduced continuous glucose monitoring program can be expanded for more people who have diabetes.
Details of the program were announced yesterday, with the one-year pilot focusing on people under the age of 18 with type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Heather Power says they chose to focus on pediatric patients because they are at the highest risk for complications as management of type one can be quite onerous and stressful for families. She says that’s because it requires constant monitoring and dietary efforts, which can be difficult for parents to monitor in children and teenagers.
For the pilot, she says they had to start somewhere, but is hopeful for a further expansion to adults as well.
