Food First NL is eagerly awaiting a National School Food Policy from the federal government.
Canada is currently the only G7 country without such a program.
Josh Smee with Food First NL says that they are looking to get ahead of the plan being released by hiring a school food program coordinator.
The coordinator would pull together all groups interested in working on school food, such as Kids Eat Smart and the School Lunch Association to prepare them for the strategy implementation.
Smee says the fact that Canada does not have a plan is an “embarrassment”, and it is desperately needed for this province.
He says Newfoundland and Labrador has some of the highest rates of children going to school hungry and school food programs are important to addressing that.
