The provincial government is touting 796 new housing options being made available in the province since 2021, but a further breakdown of those numbers reveals that over 200 of those are not yet fully completed.
According to figures provided to VOCM News by the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, 572 of the hosuing options are completed and ready to go.
Eleven new NLHC builds have been completed out of a total of 107. Eight units are nearing completion.
In terms of supportive housing, there are 56 units under construction at The Gathering Place, with 20 fully opened at the Centre of Hope in St. John’s.
Under shelter beds, 114 spots have been completed, with another 60 under development and in various stages of completion.
As well, there is a new seven-unit second-stage housing project in Labrador City that is under construction, and there is a new transition house being built that will eventually expand the number of women’s shelter beds by five.
The other 427 housing options that make up the 572 total come through the Canada Housing Benefit.
