St. John’s is going to provide free menstrual products at some city-owned buildings.
City council approved $12,000 to buy personal items for city hall and six recreation facilities where staff are present. They will be available in female and gender-neutral washrooms.
Councillor Ian Froude says period poverty is a concern as it can lead to improper usage of menstrual products.
He says lack of access to such products can result in physical or psychological health risks because of the use of unsuitable improvised solutions or using products longer than their recommended time frame.
