Ongoing refurbishment of the National War Memorial on Duckworth Street in St. John’s means that Remembrance Day ceremonies this year will be held in a different location for the first time in a century.
This year’s wreath-laying and commemoration ceremonies will take place at the Sergeant’s Memorial on Queen’s Road.
In recent years, attendance at the annual Remembrance Day and Memorial Day ceremonies at the National War Memorial have surged.
Work on the National War Memorial includes the creation of a tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where the remains of an unidentified soldier from Newfoundland and Labrador will be interred.
The National War Memorial is expected to be refurbished and ready for Memorial Day ceremonies on July 1.
