Marystown residents, and anyone else who relied on the Canning Bridge, now have a better idea of when it will be replaced.

Mayor Brian Keating says the province has committed to a new bridge, in place, by the end of 2026.

Keating provided the update to VOCM News while attending the MNL conference in downtown St. John’s yesterday.

He says the Is have been dotted and the Ts have been crossed.

“They came out, they said it, they put it in writing, they gave it in a file. We’re gonna hold their feet to the fire on this. It’s not so fast as everyone wants but the province has been working with council and the residents, and 2026 for a bridge that spans over 300 feet long? Let’s make sure it’s done right and serves the purpose for the next 60 to 70 years.”

Meanwhile, Placentia West-Bellevue MHA Jeff Dwyer tabled a petition in the House of Assembly yesterday seeking financial relief for the extra costs or lost income due to the bridge closure.

Area MHA and minister Paul Pike says the issue is on his radar.

“We realize there are hardships and we’re willing to work with the Town of Marystown and any other partners in addressing it.”
