The St. John’s Regional Fire Department are dousing hot spots after containing a three-alarm fire that destroyed one home and spread to an adjacent multi-unit home in the capital city’s downtown.
Power has been cut to approximately 300 customers as firefighters work to contain the blaze.
The fire broke out at a home on Lime Street at the corner of Livingstone behind the Mary Brown’s Centre around 7:45 a.m. sending a thick pall of black smoke over the harbour.
The tightly packed area consists mainly of attached older wooden homes.
Deputy Chief Roger Hounsell says crews were met by heavy fire and smoke, “so we laid an attack line initially, and started to do an interior attack…we got so far but the fire was too heavy, so we had to come out and start to do a defensive attack on the fire.”
Deputy Chief Hounsell says the fire is contained to two homes, and they are now going through the multi-unit home to ensure that the fire has not spread further.
