The provincial government has announced the details of its new Quarry Resources Act.
The new legislation replaces the decades old Quarry Minerals Act. Its purpose is to manage and regulate the extraction of quarry resources.
The changes include a new tenure system for quarries, new site rehabilitations requirements, enhanced monitoring and enforcement, and the establishment of quarry resource management areas.
According to government, the industry is valued $30-million per year, resulting in annual employment of 550 person years.
