A man convicted of a brutally-violent killing in St. John’s has had his day parole extended.
Brian Doyle was 20 years old when he murdered Catherine Carroll on New Year Eve’s in 1991, stabbing her more than 50 times.
But he allowed Carroll’s son, Greg Parsons, to be convicted and go to prison for it.
Parsons did four years before he was cleared by DNA testing, while Doyle later confessed to undercover officers and was sentenced to 18 years before parole.
Doyle has been eligible for parole since 2020, but broke release conditions on his first try. He got a second chance last year and completed three months of day parole without incident.
He was granted more freedom in June of this year, and has now had his day parole extended by another six months, based on compliance with the terms of his most recent release.
Parsons, meanwhile, has continually opposed any release for Doyle, a childhood friend, insisting he’s a chameleon who changes according to the environment.
He said he wasn’t surprised by the recent decision to release Doyle, adding he fears more for the community where he ends up.
In its recent decision, however, two parole board members concluded Doyle’s continued release on day parole “will not pose an undue risk to the public and will facilitate his reintegration into the community as a law-abiding citizen.”
