This Wednesday, December 6, marks a dark day in Canadian history—the anniversary of the shooting at École Polytechnique in Montreal, and the deaths of 14 young female engineering students.
The shocking crime, which saw the gunman seek out female students, shook the country to the core, and led to the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
This year the anniversary is being marked in a different way. Traditionally a vigil is held on December 6, but this year, MUN will host vigils every day this week from Monday through Friday.
A table will be set up in the main lobby of Memorial University’s Engineering building where daily silent vigils will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. today, tomorrow, Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday the 7, a table will be set up on the third floor of the University Centre next to the RBC.
The Sexual Harassment Office at MUN says the change is meant to focus on how ending gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility.
