RCMP on the island had a busy weekend contending with several serious crashes involving suspected impaired drivers.
The most serious of the collisions occurred Saturday night. Around 10:30, two vehicles collided on Salmonier Line. The driver of one of the vehicles, a 27-year-old man, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. According to the RCMP, the man showed signs of impairment and was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Blood samples have been taken and the investigation is continuing.
The driver of the second vehicle suffered injuries which were not life-threatening.
The next day, police responded to a single-vehicle crash in Mount Moriah, near Corner Brook. The 47-year-old driver would later provide breath samples nearly four times the legal limit.
A similar incident unfolded two days earlier on the TCH east of Deer Lake.
Following a single-vehicle crash, the 59-year-old driver provided breath samples that were more than double the legal limit.
A 27-year-old man is under investigation for suspected drug-impaired driving after crashing his vehicle Sunday evening in Sheaves Cove.
In addition to those investigations, four others were arrested in various areas of the province for alcohol-impaired driving offences, and numerous others had their licenses suspended due to their blood-alcohol levels.
