Marine Atlantic service has been halted by high winds on the west coast. That means the Gulf ferries will not sail today or tonight.
Environment Canada has a winter storm warning out for parts of the west coast – primarily the Corner Brook area – and the Northern Peninsula. Ian Hubbard, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says the snowbelt in this case stretches from the Northern Peninsula to roughly Stephenville.
The snow will continue through tonight with about another 5cm to come in most areas, and another 15 cm possible over higher terrain.
That same system is making for a windy day right across the island.
The centre of the low is well northwest of the island giving westerly to northwesterly winds.
