It was a messy, treacherous commute on metro area roads this morning thanks to snow and winds that caused drifting and blowing snow.
While the worst of the weather has moved out of the northeast Avalon region, many drivers questioned whether the city was ready for this morning’s conditions.
St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen says crews were out overnight salting the roads, but the weather closed in on them quickly just after 7:00 this morning.
He says it got bad around then all of a sudden and it was slow-going on the roads.
Provincial Crews Out, Conditions Worst on West Coast
Transportation and Works Minister John Abbott says conditions across the province are variable, with the west coast being among the hardest-hit regions.
Abbott is directing those planning to travel the roads today to check in with 511 to see where the highway plows are and get an update on road conditions.
He says provincial crews were ready for messy conditions this morning. As of mid-day, the west coast saw the highest accumulations of snowfall, while conditions on the northeast Avalon had improved considerably
