A portion of Marine Drive in Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, which has been barricaded off due to cliffside erosion, has gotten so bad that plow operators are refusing to plow the road because of dangerous conditions.
Area MHA Joedy Wall says in one area, the guard rail is actually suspended in the air where the ground below has fallen away.
Concerns about the area from the Lower Road to the Lookout have been voiced for years.
Barricades and barriers are up in the area and the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has deemed the road to be safe, but Wall says plow operators are afraid to use the road.
An external contractor has been hired to clear that portion of the road. Wall says the road was included in the 2020-21 Provincial Roads Plan, but nothing was done.
Wall says the road has to be moved farther inland away from the cliff, requiring the expropriation of land. He’s hoping work will finally begin next year.
