Officials at MUNSU are pleased that Ottawa has backed off—at least for now—restrictions on the number of hours which international students are permitted to work.
Currently, they can log a full-time job but the federal government announced a few weeks ago that it was going to impose a limit of 20 hours per week come the end of the calendar year. Ottawa has since said that plan is on hold until at least April.
Jawad Chowdhury, Director of Campaigns at the Memorial University Students Union, welcomes the news.
Had the restriction gone ahead, he believes that some international students would have just worked under the table because of what he calls an affordability crisis.
